The present study provides a comprehensive analysis of the biochemical composition (proximate composition, amino acids and fatty acids in gonad, digestive gland and muscle) of the cirrate octopod, Opisthoteuthis calypso, collected off the coast of Portugal. Protein and energy contents of O. calypso were significantly lower (p < 0.05) than those observed for coastal octopods, suggesting that the gelatinous musculature of the cirrate octopus may not be a direct consequence of food limitation, but rather associated with reduced selective pressure for strong swimming ability in the deep sea. Moreover, principal component analyses of fatty acid (FA) data clearly separated coastal octopods from O. calypso. Saturated FA biomarkers (namely 16:0, 17:0, 18:0) and monounsaturated FA 22:1 suggest a higher phytodetrital influence on diet of O. calypso. A clear separation between groups was also observed with amino acid (AA) data. However, essential AA and non-essential AA designations (based on the flow of carbon through biochemical systems) do not necessarily provide an accurate picture of the origins of amino nitrogen in the deep-sea environment. Elder and poplar leaves from various sampling sites were studied with respect to their antimony content. Moreover, a retrospective determination of Sb was performed in representative limnic and terrestrial samples of the Federal Environmental Specimen Bank of Germany which have been collected over 14 years. The analytical procedure is based on an open vessel acid digestion of freeze-dried biological samples and the subsequent quantification of Sb in the digests by flow injection hydride generation atomic absorption spectrometry. Strict quality control schemes were applied to the entire procedure to guarantee accurate and precise results. No long-term changes of the Sb concentrations were found in spruce shoots or poplar leaves from different sampling sites. However, spruce shoots from a semi-natural region showed concentrations of Sb (approximately 22 ng g-1; range: 17-29 ng g-1) that were approximately four times lower than in corresponding samples from an urban-industrialized area. The analysis of virgin and washed elder leaves revealed that approximately 20-30% of the Sb is present on the leaf surface. Sb levels in elder leaves ranged from 5.2 +/- 0.3 ng g-1 in samples from Argentina to 589 +/- 30 ng g-1 in leaves collected directly beside a motorway in Germany. Similarly, poplar leaves from Argentina and Chile showed about 4 ng Sb g-1, whereas 150 ng Sb g-1 was found in poplar leaves from Germany. The lowest concentrations of Sb were determined in digests of pigeon eggs (approximately 2 ng g-1), bream liver (approximately 4 ng g-1) and deer liver (approximately 6 ng g-1). A similar pattern of Sb concentrations in spruce shoots, leaves or liver samples from an industrialized area and an agrarian ecosystem in Germany was established. Concentrations of Sb in elder leaves were closely associated with car traffic, giving maximum concentrations of 589 ng g-1 directly beside a motorway, 207 ng g-1 50 m from the motorway and 153 ng g-1 in a close residential area. 相似文献

The common tube-building polychaete Lanice conchilega is known as a habitat structuring species and can form dense aggregations. The effects of L. conchilega on the surrounding benthic community have received little attention, especially in subtidal areas. Therefore, the presence
of L. conchilega in different habitats in the North Sea and its effect on the abundance, species richness, diversity and community structure
in these habitats are evaluated in the present paper, based on data from the ICES North Sea Benthos Survey of 2000. Lanice conchilega has a wide geographical distribution and a low habitat specialization, but optimally occurs in shallow fine sands. In the
present study, the presence of L. conchilega resulted in a density increase and a significant (positive) correlation of the benthos density with the density of L. conchilega. Furthermore, the species richness (number of species) increased with increasing density of L. conchilega. This trend was, however, not consistent: the number of species reached more or less an asymptotic value or even decreased
after reaching a critical density of L. conchilega (>500–1,000 ind/m2), as observed in shallow fine sands. The same overall pattern was detected concerning the expected number
of species. The N
1-diversity index showed similar or slightly higher values in L. conchilega patches compared to patches without L. conchilega. From the results of the community analysis, it can be concluded that the species, which were responsible for the increase
of the diversity, belonged to the overall species-pool of that habitat. The effects on density and diversity differed between
the four discerned habitats (shallow muddy sand, shallow fine sand, shallow medium sand and deep fine sand), and were most
pronounced in shallow fine sands. These patterns can be attributed to the habitat structuring capacity of L. conchilega. The mechanisms responsible for the increase of the habitat quality in patches of L. conchilega can be summarized as (1) changes in the hydrodynamics, (2) increases of the habitat stability and oxygen supply, and (3)
a creation of habitat heterogeneity in a uniform environment. In this way, L. conchilega alters the habitat characteristics and affects other organisms, and can therefore even be considered as an ecosystem engineer.
In other words, L. conchilega patches are responsible for an increased habitat quality in an otherwise uniform habitat, which results in a higher survival

Differential interests between the sexes regarding the number of copulations can result in sexual harassment. Hence, females
may have less time available for foraging. Male sexual harassment often leads to fitness reduction in females. We used the
mating complex of the bisexual fish Poecilia mexicana and the co-occurring all-female Poecilia formosa to study sexual harassment and its incurred cost on female feeding efficiency. P. formosa is a sperm-dependent parthenogen that requires mating with host males to induce embryogenesis, but the male genes are not
used. We therefore predicted P. mexicana males to prefer conspecific females. Hence, costs of male sexual harassment should not occur in unisexuals. While P. formosa are at a disadvantage compared to P. mexicana females due to male mate choice (leading to sperm limitation), this could be traded-off by suffering less from sexual harassment.
In our experiment, we found males to direct significantly more pre-copulatory mating behaviour towards conspecific females,
whereas actual mating attempts did not differ between species. Contrary to our prediction, both types of females started feeding
later and spent less time feeding in the presence of a male partner compared to the time spent feeding with another female,
suggesting that females of both species suffer from male harassment. The focal females' feeding time declined with increasing
body size of the female competitor, and the same pattern was found when a male was present. We discuss that—besides sexual
harassment—other factors such as food competition and female mate choice may affect female feeding efficiency. 相似文献

Leaders are central actors in catalysing such change by developing, implementing and promoting innovative ideas, products and practices. Not only large but also small enterprises can aspire to assume leadership for sustainability. This contribution explores the environmental, climate and social leadership of the social enterprise Fairphone that seeks to start a movement towards a more sustainable smartphone sector. Endowed with barely any structural power, it relies on other leadership types, especially entrepreneurial leadership, which is based on dialogue, persuasion and coalition-building. Small enterprises can be leaders, but pursuing a goal such as transforming the smartphone sector takes a step-by-step approach targeting different follower groups from suppliers, competitors and consumers to end-of-life processors and policymakers. In chemotherapy, various anti-cancer drugs with different mechanisms of action are used and may represent different risk of undesirable delayed side effects in treated patients as well as in occupationally exposed populations. The aim of the present study was to evaluate genotoxic potential of four widely used anti-cancer drugs with different mechanisms of action: 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), cisplatin (CDDP) and etoposide (ET) that cause cell death by targeting DNA function and imatinib mesylate (IM) that inhibits targeted protein kinases in cancer cells in an experimental model with human hepatoma HepG2 cells. After 24 h of exposure all four anti-cancer drugs at non-cytotoxic concentrations induced significant increase in formation of DNA double strand breaks (DSBs), with IM being the least effective. The analysis of the changes in the expression of genes involved in the response to DNA damage (CDKN1A, GADD45A, MDM2), apoptosis (BAX, BCL2) and oncogenesis (MYC, JUN) showed that 5-FU, CDDP and ET upregulated the genes involved in DNA damage response, while the anti-apoptotic gene BCL2 and oncogene MYC were downregulated. On the contrary, IM did not change the mRNA level of the studied genes, showing different mechanism of action that probably does not involve direct interaction with DNA processing. Genotoxic effects of the tested anti-cancer drugs were observed at their therapeutic concentrations that may consequently lead to increased risk for development of delayed adverse effects in patients. In addition, considering the genotoxic mechanism of action of 5-FU, CDDP and ET an increased risk can also not be excluded in occupationally exposed populations. The results also indicate that exposure to 5-FU, CDDP and ET represent a higher risk for delayed effects such as cancer, reproductive effects and heritable disease than exposure to IM. 相似文献

Although induced plant responses to herbivory are well studied as mechanisms of resistance, how induction shapes community interactions and ultimately plant fitness is still relatively unknown. Using a wild tomato, Solanum peruvianum, native to the Peruvian Andes, we evaluated the disruption of pollination as a potential ecological cost of induced responses. More specifically, we tested the hypothesis that metabolic changes in herbivore-attacked plants, such as the herbivore-induced emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), alter pollinator behavior and consequentially affect plant fitness. We conducted a series of manipulative field experiments to evaluate the role of herbivore-induced vegetative and floral VOC emissions as mechanisms by which herbivory affects pollinator behavior. In field surveys and bioassays in the plants' native habitat, we found that real and simulated herbivory (methyl jasmonate application) reduced attractiveness of S. peruvianum flowers to their native pollinators. We show that reduced pollinator preference, not resource limitation due to leaf tissue removal, resulted in reduced seed set. Solitary bee pollinators use floral plant volatiles, emitted in response to herbivory or methyl jasmonate treatment, as cues to avoid inflorescences on damaged plants. This herbivory-induced pollinator limitation can be viewed as a general cost of induced plant responses as well as a specific cost of herbivory-induced volatile emission. 相似文献
